The overall aim of the Brisbane Breast Bank is to collect and provide donated patient samples to facilitate research that will have a long term impact on breast cancer outcomes. Initiated in 2005, this invaluable resource holds a large collection of tissue and blood samples from breast cancer patients, linked to relevant medical information. Normal breast tissue specimens from patients undergoing reconstructive plastic surgery and brain tissue from patients undergoing surgery for brain metastasis samples are also collected. As a part of the tissue bank’s quality control an anatomical pathologist performs research specific internal review on every piece of tissue, to ensure that the material is suitable for research projects. These various specimens are mainly collected from Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital but we also collect clinical samples from the Gold Coast and Wesley Hospitals. Currently, the Brisbane Breast Bank holds over 600 tissue samples and close to 1400 blood samples. Moreover, the tissue bank has contributed resources towards a number of breast cancer research projects including those of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and the Ludwig Institute of Cancer Research as well as our own research funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), RBWH Foundation and Cancer Council Queensland.
